The Foundation of Good Style

Aristotle tells us that the foundation of good style is correctness of language, which falls under five points: 1) Using proper grammar; 2) Using specific names; 3) Avoiding vague language; 4) Using proper noun gender forms; and 5) Expressing proper plural, singular, and combined noun forms.

1) The misuse of grammar has been the downfall of many good arguments; I’m sure I am not the only person who has been reading a good argument and then stumbles across a their in place of a they’re.

2) When writing, be sure to call items or ideas by their specific names; for example, use “premises” instead of “things.”

3) Another downfall is ambiguities. Ambiguities are often wrongly used to make nothing sound like something, or a guess sound more likely to come true; if those are not what you’re aiming for, avoid ambiguities.

4) Proper pronoun gender forms (he, she, we, they) is basic grammar and should never be overlooked.

5) As well as pronoun forms, plural, singular, and compound nouns are important to remember when writing.
